Local Groups
Local Groups are made up of 25 or more BC Chapter members located in the same city or region. These members come together for a variety of reasons: concern about a local environmental issue, shared stewardship values, or simply a love of the local surroundings. Or perhaps a combination of all three! Local groups host events, community nights, guest speakers, potlucks, and dances, even parties. Many of them also organize outings such as hiking or kayaking trips. Local groups have their own bylaws and Executive Committee, which serves the role of a board of directors.
Successes
Since 1969, Sierra Club BC has played a leading role in environmental stewardship in this province. Our success is grounded in advocating for science-based policy, supporting solid grassroots initiatives and inspiring passionate commitment to the values of environmental stewardship.
Our accomplishments include:
- Negotiating an historic land use agreement protecting more than two million hectares of the Great Bear Rainforest from logging.
- Bringing home the potential impact of climate change on coastal communities with the release of two flood maps of the Lower Mainland and Greater Victoria.
- Stopping the development of a coal burning power plant on Vancouver Island.
- Helping to create and gain international approval for a certification standard for sustainable forestry (FSC).
- Providing consumers with tools for making informed seafood choices -- helping people choose sustainable seafood.
- Successfully promoting a conservation-based harvesting policy for sockeye salmon.
- Bringing international focus to Clayoquot Sound, now a model for a change in community and First Nations management of our forest.
- Leading the way for protection of over 70,000 hectares of ancient forests on Vancouver Island, including Carmanah, Tahsish and Tsitika/Robson Bight.
