According to the BC Ministry of Advanced Education, [1] Camosun College "has served the educational and training needs of the people of Southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Delivered from two vibrant campuses in beautiful settings, Camosun College serves the post-secondary educational needs of more than 8,600 full-time students in Greater Victoria each year. Students enjoy a range of over 100 diploma, certificate, associate degree and bachelor degree programs, and more than 400 university transfer courses in arts and science, business, health and human services, and trades and technologies. In addition, there are over 10,500 registrants to Camosun’s broad range of non-credit continuing education programs. Camosun offers a personal, friendly, cost-effective learning environment."

CSEA : Camosun Students for Environmental Awareness

The CSEA started with the campaign to get 100 % post-consumer recycled paper.

  • was very successful (first school in B.C, though the university doesn’t promo this much)
  • Have been working on compost campaign to get more composting on campus(was stalled due to funds, but looks promising)
  • Also the Green Initiative Challenge (partnership between university, admin, Students ----Union and the Nexus student newspaper
  • have also created a position within the Students Union (have institutionalized the position so it will continue)

Carbon Neutral and Beyond-Carbon Neutral Planning Initiatives

Policy

  • Camosun is implementing an Energy Management Program [1] to increase its energy efficiency and reduce its contribution to the production of greenhouse gasses.
  • Camosun passed an Environmental Management Policy in 2005.
  • Sustainability, and specifically Camosun's Energy Management Program, is highlighted in the 2006-2008 Strategic Plan [2].

Institutional Structure

  • Energy Project Team is responsible for reducing energy consumption and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions [2], (Camosun Energy Management Program [1]).
  • BC Hydro is funding an Energy Manager position, all Energy Studies, up to 70% of the cost of an Awareness Campaign, and approximately 15% of the costs of energy retrofits (Camosun Energy Management Program [1]).

GHG Inventory

Camosun's scope 2 emissions were equivalent to 2,242 tonnes of carbon in one year [3].

Buildings

  • The 2005 Environmental Management Policy commits to "comply with or exceed appropriate environmental regulation and standards, including meeting LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards in all new building construction" [3] ]
  • The Energy Management Program will retrofit buildings for energy efficiency and GHG emission mitigation [1] .

  • Camosun offers the U-Pass program to students [4].
  • Camosun has bike racks and there are showers available in the Recreation and Fitness departments
  • Carpools are encouraged with discounted parking passes [5].

Food

Purchasing

  • Camosun has green purchasing policies (Owens and Moore, 2008 pgs. 20, 22 [4]).
  • The Camosun Energy Management Program [1] tasks the Purchasing Department Manager with developing energy guidelines for the purchasing policy, and supporting the implementation of energy standards to help lower energy use on campus.

Waste

  • Camosun composts garden and restaurant waste [6], and has piloted a paper towel composting program as well (Owens and Moore, 2008 pgs. 20, 22 [4]).
  • Camosun has a recycling program [7].
