Our vision

Education institutions going beyond climate-neutral to support climate action in their communities.

Our philosophy: Why are we doing this?

We are doing this because to create a sustainable future we need creative strategies that are deeply supported by their communities. Education institutions can empower communities with research and education, connecting people from many perspectives and facilitating their collaboration. Education institutions can also help make these changes a reality with their own operations.

Sustainability is:

We have never had a formal discussion about the definition of sustainability.

Our objectives: How are we going to do this?

We are going to do this by facilitating collaborative planning at universities and colleges to develop beyond climate-neutral plans that integrate the research, education, and operations of their institutions into comprehensive climate strategies.

These planning processes combine the diverse perspectives needed for good plans, and build the support necessary for them to be implemented. In time, we plan to facilitate the collaboration of education institutions that have created beyond climate-neutral plans as they work in their local communities.

Projects: Past, Present and Future

We are currently engaged in three major initiatives at our two hubs, one at UVic, and one at UBC.

The UBC hub is working on campaign called Get Evolved, Be Involved. The campaign is designed to spread awareness on environmental issues and engage people in a collaborative planning process called the Climate Action Partnership.

The UVic hub has been running a collaborative planning process to move UVic beyond climate-neutral. This process has included several conferences and is near its final stages as UVic begins a formal process to create a sustainability policy and action plan.

At the provincial level Common Energy has been working with the Sierra Youth Coalition to develop the Campus Climate Network to move education institutions across B.C. beyond climate-neutral.
