Sustainability Working Group (SWiG)

The Sustainability Working Group (SWiG) was started in the fall of 2006 to begin addressing some of the unsustainable practices of the institution. At this time, their president signed the Talloires Declaration - the first art insitute in Canada to pledge such a commitment to sustainability.

Since then, SWiG has taken on a number of initiatives, including the [SYC Campus Tools|Campus Sustainability Assessment Framework] (CSAF) for credit. Spring 2007 saw the group focusing on the waste indicators of the CSAF. They managed to create a great visual display of the group as they did the waste audit, drawing in curious passers-by as they worked! Check out the pictures of the Waste Audit. By using the results from this research and the public interest generated by the event, they are now working with the Board of Governors to initiate long-lasting initiatives or policy to reduce waste and create alternative waste streams such as composting at the school Goals for the year:

  • Establish Curriculum/courses that include CSAF indicators, establishing baselines
  • Lobby ECI admin to establish institute-wide sustainability projects, policy and sustainability coordinator or office

Campaigns:

  • Waste reduction, on-campus composting program
  • Network Liason(s) :Juan, Philippa, Lori
