Gladstone Secondary was the first Vancouver school to join the SHS Network, with Ben Nixon coming on his own to attend the Sustainable High Schools Symposium held in Victoria in April 2006. In fact, SHS Project co-founder Emma Banks also attended Gladstone in 2004. Since then, Sharanya Thavakumaran and Leon Kinloch have taken over the reins, attending the SHS Youth Action Gathering in 2007 and joining the SHS Youth Steering Committee. Sharanya was selected to speak to the Premier and delegates at the provincial Climate Action Secretariat’s Youth Dialogue in April 2008! Georgia Williams and Cello Mizumoto, recipients of SHS class programs in grade 8, then got more involved and represented SHS at the Campus Climate Network Summit in May 2008, paving the way for SHS to join forces with the CCN to co-host the Go Beyond Summit in August 2008. Since then, Cello and Georgia have brought the SHS Project to Prince of Wales, where they will be starting PoW's Trek program in 2008-2009.

Sustainability Advisory Committee

The GOOSSE club (Gladstone Organization Of Students for a Sustainable Environment) held the first SAC meeting in June 2007, bringing together their principal, head custodian, students from other clubs at the school, and several teachers – some of whom had their classes take part in the class program in 2006-2007. Student leaders have struggled toestablish a regualr meeting or structure for their SAC since then, however, and helped identify the resources and staff support priorities that would better enable them to succeed in 2008-2009.

Sustainability Assessment

Gladstone piloted how classes can help to calculate HSSAF indicators through hosting 4 SHS class programs in 2007 on Energy, Water and Economy and Wealth. Gladstone's Science 10 class was the first to successfully test the quality of their tap water using an SHS-recommended water quality testing kit offered by the http://www.safewater.org Safe Drinking Water Foundation!]

Sustainability Initiatives

GOOSE members have developed and implemented a school-wide recycling program and worked with the Global issues club to run a land mines campaign and host a fundraiser dinner. They have also worked with student leaders from Kitsilano and King George to co-organize a student-facilitated full day forum on district-wide sustainability initiatives. At this event, 3 student representatives from every school in the Vancouver School District met with 50 School Board trustees and district staff to decide how to implement the VSB's new committment to Sustainability.

Engaging Classes with the Sierra Club's Education Program

Gladstone's Montessori, SocialStudies 11 and Science 10 classes hosted 2-visit SHS class programs in 2007 on Energy, Water, and Economy & Wealth.

In 2007-2008, Sharanya, Leon and Georgia received training and co-facilitated SHS class presentations at new Vancouver schools Magee and Kitsilano, and Richmond schools McRoberts and McNair.
