Students and teachers from Glenlyon Norfolk School first found out about the SHS Project in 2006, during a water conference held by Mulgrave School in North Vancouver. Two GNS students, Simone Brodie and Claire Butterfeild participated in the SHS Youth Action Gathering in August 2007 and became members of the 2007-2008 SHS Youth Steering Committee. Sustainability Advisory Committee

In 2007-2008, Glenlyon Norfolk School created a student “G-Team” as well as a SAC and hosted a school-wide environmental forum where over 120 students, staff, and parents came together to create 1-month, 1-year, and 5-year plans for the school. This coordinated planning has led GNS to plan extensive and sustainable renovations that will include geothermal heating and rooftop gardens.

Sustainability Assessment

GNS's G-Team has been working to calculate its Energy Indicators, in which project it has been helped out by the 4 grade 10 science classes who worked on an audit of the efficiency ratings of the school's appliances and fixtures.

Sustainability Initiatives

In the fall 2007, the G-Team ran an awareness campaign about pollution and waste diversion. They hosted students from all across BC at their annual Change Conference in January 2008, and then held an ambitious line-up of Earth Week events in April.

In October 2008, GNS will co-host the Round Square Conference on Sustainable Communities. with Collingwood School. Student leaders trained by SHS staff will co-facilitate sustainability visioning, asset mapping and action planning with 180 students!

Engaging Classes with the Sierra Club's Education Program

GNS brought Sierra Club BC in to facilitate 2 visits of the Energy Class Program with four science 10 classes in May 2008. 10 GNS classrooms also joined in the Classroom Action Challenge Program, with students making and keeping committments that led to GNS reducing its consumption of over 60,000 Litres of water, 12,000 kg of CO2 and shifted over $4000.00 into sustainable and ethical purchases.
