GoBEYOND
From ClimateNetworkWiki
Climate change is happening now. It is already changing our weather, our forests, our ways of life. By the middle of this century, within the adult lifetimes of today’s students, our global society must end our dependence on fossil fuels and become completely climate-neutral. We need to act today to choose a just and prosperous future.
From riding a bike to work to buying local food or saving money on energy bills, people like us can start to work towards this change. By joining forces, we have an incredible opportunity to not just reduce our own impacts, but to go beyond climate-neutral by contributing to solutions that are larger then ourselves.
goBEYOND is a youth driven project that is being launched this fall at Thompson Rivers University, the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia. It will reach out to thousands of students across the province to educate, inspire, engage and support youth taking climate action on their campuses and in their communities.
goBEYOND is a project of the Campus Climate Network.
Thank you to the generous support of the Climate Action Secretariat, BC Hydro, and the Ministry of Advanced Education.

Our Goals
Go Beyond seeks to educate, inspire, engage and support students in implementing climate action on campuses.
- Educate students about the science and solutions for climate change in B.C.
- Inspire youth to make carbon smart lifestyle choices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Engage youth in creating larger climate solutions, particularly in participatory planning processes to move our campus communities beyond climate-neutral.
- Support youth groups to implement initiatives that will change behaviour and help create climate solutions.
The Four Pillars
Challenges
- Want to make changes in your own life? The Challenges pillar is for you! Whether you enter the Invent the Future Competition, or join the goBEYOND Challenge this pillar will offer easily adaptable projects and initiatives that directly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Read more about the Challenges Pillar...
Planning
- We need to work together to fight climate change. We are working with our institutions to create collaborative planning processes that engage the entire campus community as they move beyond climate-neutral. Read more about the Planning Pillar...
Education
- One of the primary goals of universities and colleges is to educate. By working with faculty goBEYOND hopes to establish curriculum that is engaging, community-oriented, and creates regional climate change solutions in all spheres. Read more about the Education Pillar...
Training

Featured Project
Invent the Future Contest
Invent the Future will create an outlet for youth to express innovative ideas on behavioural or technological energy conservation and climate change solutions through a video or essay contest submission. In partnership with BC Hydro and GIFTS Film School, Go Beyond will provide support for students who would like to make a submission, and offer resources and networks for those that would like to take their idea and make it a reality. Submit your ideas now!
Our Development
goBEYOND has been developed through a collaborative process that included dozens of youth from accross BC. Read through some of the ideas that helped us progress into the project we have today:
Get Involved
There are a number of ways to be involved in the planning or implementation of this project. Please don't hesitate to get in contact with us at info@campusclimatenetwork.org.
Working Groups
goBeyond has a series of working groups that are responsible for setting strategic direction for programming, communication and fundraising. These groups meet about twice a month, with some tasks in between. Participating in Working Groups is not only a great way to get more involved with goBeyond, but also to gain valuable work experience with organizational management.
1. Network Relations: If you are a process leader or a lover of grassroots governance models then this is a perfect group for you. This working group is responsible for developing innovative ways to ensure that the goBEYOND projects stay youth-driven.
Facilitator: Spencer Rasmussen
Contact: NetworkWG@campusclimatenetwork.org
2. Outreach and Communications: This group will develop an awesome communications strategy for goBEYOND that features both online tools, print media, and face to face campaigning. This is the perfect working group for outgoing people, writers, artists, design majors, or journalism types.
Facilitator: Empty
Contact: OutreachWG@campusclimatenetwork.org
3. Fundraising: Ok fundraising may sound boring, but it is one of the most important skills you can learn for work in the NGO field. Environmental Organizations are always going to need money, and volunteering with this group will give you the tools to bring in the money (hopefully). Tasks might include planning fundraising events, meeting with potential donors, and making decisions about where all the money goes once we have it.
Facilitator: Tria Donaldson

4. Program Development: The Program Development Working Groups will follow up on the direction set at the Project Development Summit, and build on our existing programs for the fall semester of goBEYOND. Potential sub-groups include:
Contact (for all working groups listed below): ProgramWG@campusclimatenetwork.org
- Education Working Group: Will develop next year's goBEYOND Teach-In and other aspects of the education pillar, such as developing train-the-trainer workshops for faculty who are integrating Sustainability into curriculum
- Facilitator: Maggie Baynham
- Contact: EducationWG@campusclimatenetwork.org
- Planning Working Group: Looking at ways to improve the Planning Pillar and support schools in developing collaborative and integrated climate action strategies.
- Facilitator: Jamie Biggar
- Contact: PlanningWG@campusclimatenetwork.org
- Challenges Working Group: Ensuring that the goBEYOND Challenge is cutting edge and relevant. Would look into things like: inter-campus challenge, and energy reduction projects for campuses
