Kitsilano Secondary: joined the SHS network in 2007 through the efforts of Noah Mazereeuw, a student leader who joined the SHS Youth Steering Committee and those of the Environmental Studies teacher, Leane DeLaigue, who successfully coordinated and registered her school for 14 SHS class programs. In addition, her 5 Environemtal Studies classes attended the Sea to Sky environmental education program. Kits student leaders also attended the Sustainable Campuses Conference held in Kamloops in February, the WWF’s Earth Flotilla in March, the Climate Action Youth Dialogue in April and hosted a meeting of all Vancouver schools to brainstorm district-wide priorities.

Sustainability Advisory Committee

The Environmental Club worked with their very supportive vice principal and other clubs to build a SAC, which they call the "Sustainability Action Club." The SAC has been meeting regularly since inception in early 2008.

Sustainability Assessment

Kits Environmental Studies, Social Studies and Science classes assessed their Energy, Water and Economy & Wealth Indicators in 2007-2008.

Sustainability Initiatives

The environmental club and classes ran many projects such as their recycling program, a design contest to screen onto and sell reusable shopping bags, as well as fundraising through selling the ever-stylish “Basura Bags.”

Engaging Classes with the Sierra Club's Education Program

Kits enrolled 14 classes in SHS’s 3-visit class programs to reduce personal consumption, measure Water and Energy indicators, and successfully re-create their school courtyard.
