Seven Question Tool for a Provincial Local Food Campaign

What are the needs that this project will address?

  • The need for a locally produced food system throughout BC, one that is less dependant on fossil fuels for transportation and packaging, one that supports our local economies and farmers

What problems can we solve to address these needs?

  • Lack of coordination between local farmers and food distributors or outlets
  • Lack of community gardens and edible landscaping on campuses
  • More mass purchasing from community-supported agriculture
  • Having contractors who are taking on local food initiatives at one school (such as Chartwells at SFU) extend those initiatives to other schools (such as Douglas)

What do we need to know to solve this problem?

  • What are some of the commonalities between campus food systems that we can come together on?
  • How much food is already being procured locally? What is the average food mileage for each campus?
  • Which food items are being imported that could be procured locally?
  • How can menus be changed to more accurately reflect what’s in season?

Who should we ask to get this information?

  • Campuses where food initiatives have taken off (SFU – Candace, UVic – Joe, UBC – Liska)

How are the decisions that affect this problem made?

  • Aramark, Chartwells, UBC Food Services - make decisions independently of administration or school
  • Gardens and edible landscaping - unions, operational staff; land-use policies of school (BoG?) or municipality

Who do we need to engage to make this change?

  • Food contractors at each campus
  • Large and small distributors

What is it going to take and how are we going to do it?

  • Food purchasing policies changed
  • Changed land-use policies of school grounds and in municipality
