Regional Paper Campaign
From ClimateNetworkWiki
Contribute to our Knowledge Base by adding the transportation initiatives, policy, or assessment models that are used on your campus. This will form the basis for how our Campus Climate Network moves forward, developing common campaigns that move institutions beyond climate-neutral.
1) What are the needs the project will address?
Forest ecosystem are being degraded by industrial logging. In order for us to maintain healthy forest ecosystems and restore degraded ecosystems we need to consume less and ensure that forest products we buy come from forests that are logged sustainability.
2) What problems can we resolve to address these needs?
Postsecondary institutions are enormous purchases and consumers of paper products. This present a significant challenge as far as reducing consumption but also an opportunity to support eco-friendly sustainable alternatives. We can address these challenges by implementing eco-friendly sustainable purchasing policy that mandates the use of post-consumer paper. Another method is reducing paper consumption by printing double side, reusing one-side good paper and using less paper in general.
3. What do we need to know to solve this problem?
- We need to know :
- the costs and benefits of using post-consumer paper projects
- which companies produce eco-friendly products
- who supplies specific postsecondary institution with paper
- current purchasing practices
- major players in your school
- best practices at other universities
4.Who should we ask to get that info?
- purchasing department
- Alantic Paper Cut program
- other universities
- industry suppliers
5.How are the decisions that effect this problem made?
Purchasing policy decided by university admin (usually under VP finance). Other factors include contracts that may exist with suppliers, internal department purchasing, etc.
6.Who do we need to engage to get this change?
- students
- faculty
- lab faculty
- staff
- admin
- secretarial staff
- purchasing
7. What is it going to take to do it?
- amassing public support: letter writing, petitions, letter to the editor etc.
- engage stake holders : meetings, tabling
- research: best practices, costs and benefits, know your stuff
- options: have a plan, options
- good relationship with stakeholders
Opportunities for Collaboration
- shared research
- bulk buying consortium (like Atlantic Paper Cut)
