According to the BC Ministry of Advanced Education, [1], Selkirk College [2], located in the West Kootenay/Boundary Region, "offers adult upgrading, university transfer associate degrees in arts and sciences and over 30 certificate and diploma programs in business and aviation, digital media, music, information technology, health and human services, hospitality and tourism, industry and trades training and renewable resources."

Policy

An environmental policy is being drafted, and environmental responsibility is named as a value in the 2005 Renewed Vision document ([1])

Institutional Structure

The Selkirk College Environmental Sustainability Committee involves students and staff/administration and seeks to move the college towards sustainability.

Buildings

  • Single-glazed windows on the Castlegar and Silver King campuses have been replaced with high efficiency double-glazed windows, at the initiative of the Facilities Department [6].

Energy

  • Cooking oil from the Castlegar campus cafeteria is used to make biodiesel. About 20 litres of per week is diverted from the landfill through this initiative [7]

  • Selkirk College offers a certificate in Renewable Energy focusing on renewable energy technologies including geothermal, micro hydro, wind, solar and biomass [9].
