According to the BC Ministry of Advanced Education, [1] the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV) [2] is "the comprehensive, regional university college for the Fraser Valley, with campuses in Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Mission, centres in Hope and Agassiz, and online courses. UCFV offers educational options that range from upgrading and continuing studies to trades and technology programs to applied and academic programs." It is currently changing status to become a university, to be known as the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV).

Carbon Neutral and Beyond-Carbon Neutral Planning Initiatives

Policy

The UCFV Strategic Plan (2004) names environmental sustainability as one of their high values [4]

Institutional Structure

The Manager of Mechanical and Electrical Systems has been responsible for implementation of energy and greenhouse gas reduction, while responsibility for policy and funding has rested with the Facilities Director and Dean of Finance and Administration, respectively (UCFV Energy Management Action Plan, 1999 [1]).

Buildings

The UCFV Strategic Plan (2004) [2] commits to the "explicit use of sustainability in planning processes" for facilities.

Energy

UCFV has been working on energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions for over a decade. Projects have included retrofits of old buildings as well as using the most current power smart technology in new construction. BC Hydro has provided rebates, and the changes have resulted in savings on energy costs every year. As just one example, a retrofit of all Abbotsford building hallway lighting with T8 technology, at a cost of $27,000.00 resulted in an annual estimated savings of 95,000kW ($4800.00) and received a BC Hydro power smart rebate of $4,800.00.

  • Action Plan 2003 [7]

Transportation

Due to its location outside of a major urban centre, UFV faces challenges in making alternatives such as public transit and cycling viable (Owens and Moore 2008 pg. 29[3]). However, the UFV Student Union Society is currently polling students on its website about their support for a U-Pass program [8].

Education and Research

  • UCFV is planing to develop an Alternative Vehicle Research and Teaching Centre within the Faculty of Trades and Technology to further study into battery electric, hybrid-electric, fuel cell, and alternative-fueled vehicles (UCFV. 2004. [4]).
  • The UCFV Centre for Environmental Sustainability [9] conducts research, education, and acts as a demonstration site. One of its projects involves researching climate-adapted crop species.
  • The Cascade Institute [10] "facilitates the collection and distribution of information, offers a variety of educational opportunities, supports planning and mapping activities, and generally encourages appropriate research in various areas of sustainability."

Civic and Community Engagement

  • The UCFV Strategic Plan (2004) [2] aims for the university to be "seen as a catalyst in community development and sustainability."
  • The Centre for Environmental Sustainability aims to work with community partners.
