Why: To learn the skills, build the teams, and exchange the knowledge necessary to take action toward climate change solutions and sustainability on schools and campuses across B.C.
What: 2008 Go Beyond Youth Action Gathering Program
The Get Sustainable! Galabash! fundraiser on July 13th, 4-7:30pm in Market Square was a huge success! Thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors, and participants who made it happen.
The BC Campus Climate Network will provide powerful training opportunities for post-secondary students who would like to see their peers and institutions achieve deep emission reductions while fostering a culture of sustainability. Students old and new to the Sustainable High Schools Project will share their successes, challenges, and visions of the future for sustainability initiatives at their schools while building new skills and friendships.
After attending the Go Beyond Youth Action Gathering, post-secondary aged youth will receive ongoing support from the B.C. Campus Climate Network through the Go Beyond Project, and high-school aged youth will be supported by the Sierra Club/Sierra Youth Coalition’s Sustainable High Schools Project.
Both the Go Beyond Project and Sustainable High Schools are youth-driven projects that aim to see long-term change embodied in the operations, curriculum, and culture of their school. The Go Beyond Youth Action Gathering will be a critical learning space that will enable youth to make this change happen.
In addition to specialized training, space will be made for the two groups to collaborate, learn together, and mentor each other while camping at Wildwood, a beautiful ecoforestry site near Nanaimo, BC. There will also be a shorter strategic visioning session (August 22-24) for those who would like to participate but are unable to attend the entire week, which will look at the future of the GO BEYOND program and at its partnership with the Sustainable High Schools Project.

Our Venues
WILDWOOD ECOFORESTRY SITE
Wildwood is a beautiful forest that has been logged sustainably for many decades by Merve Wilkinson (who still lives on the property). Wildwood is now looked after by The Land Conservancy's Jay Rastogi, who will take us on a tour during our first weekend.
Most of our programming will take place at Wildwood for both post-secondary and high school streams. High school participants and some staff will camp in the meadow. We can also go swimming in the lake (down the road, past Merve's house, and through the orchard).
In order to protect Wildwood, it is very important that we stick to the road and meadow to minimize damage to the fauna. Due to the risk of forest fire, absolutely no smoking is permitted on site (smokers are asked to walk out to the road).
While at Wildwood all our electricity will be provided by solar panels, so please leave unnecessary electronics at home.
Zuiderzee campsite is a short way north from Wildwood (a 10-15 minute bike ride). Post-secondary students and some BC Campus Climate Network staff will camp here during the week. There is some access to electricity and showers can be enjoyed for $1 each.
If you are arriving independently or while the majority of the group is in programming at Wildwood, please consult the acommodation list sent out on Tuesday August 19th via email and put your gear in your assigned tent and then join us at Wildwood. If you are not sure which tent you are in, please call Maggie Knight at 250 508 3117 or leave your gear in the large yellow and green tent on Site 11 and proceed to Wildwood where you can receive more details.
